Audience Engagement Research - The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project is an american horror film released in 1999 and pioneered the found footage horror genera. The story focuses on three film students as they try to document a local legend about paranormal activities in the woods, know as the Blair Witch. The students take cameras and camping equipment into the woods in order to uncover and record the mysteries of the Blair Witch. The students begin to experience progressively more and more paranormal experiences as they spend days in the woods, until they are confronted by the Witch.

We Chose to review this film for our audience engagement research due to the fact that we share a similar genera to this film. Additionally, the film has a very low budget look, lacking very high end video quality and with points of the film that are deliberately confusing to the audience. They due this in order to show the plight of the characters fear in the movie, characterizing the protagonists through cinematography. The budget style of film persists in The Blair Witch Project as well as our own film, and for this reason we believe that we will have a similar target.

The Blair Witch Project used traditional marketing tactics as well as one quite unique and original form of promotion. First and foremost The Blair Witch created promotional images and posters that were displayed outside of theaters, as well as a trailer to promote their film. Additionally, The Blair Witch Project used the internet to the best of their ability to promote their film. They created a website that had hidden clues and information pertaining to the film, with fake newspapers and puzzles that could be solved by the audience to learn more about the film and create intrigue in their product. The Blair Witch Project essentially created an ARG, or an alternate reality game, in order to promote their film.

My team and I will try to emulate some of the aspects that the Blair Witch utilized in order to better market our film. We will emulate the use of promotional posters, a rather standard marketing tactic, however we will also try to create an online ARG in order to create intrigue in our product and bring more attention to our film as well as cultivate a mysterious atmosphere.
